I scuffed the steel with steel wool, then used an overhead projector to enlarge the image. After using lead pencil to draw it on I started with the yellow (I always start with the lightest colour), then gradually building shades with orange.
Orange done. I now used some light/meduim grey with a hint of brown to start to filling the darker areas.
A bit closer to the action.
Now for those legs! Adding more brown to some of the grey I started shading the legs leaving it light where the shiny parts are (I'll add white to this later). Then I added more black to the brown mix for the edges of her legs and the skirt shadow.
Now I use the brown to do the hair plaits and start to darken the grey bits under arm, boob, collar etc.
Now using 2 shades of grey and a little black/brown I filled in the skirt area. Using a spray sheild was very helpful here. Next was fleshy tones for the face and arms (white, red, yellow a little brown). Then the hair using dark brown with light streaks.
More dk brown detail on the hands. Also the blue eyes and pinky lips.
These baby blue eyes were done with spray sheilds usig light/medium blue and white. The eyelids/lashes dk brown. Those lush pink lips took forever to get the colour and shape right, again the sheilds were a godsend.
Now using white I shaded the top of her hair, which made a huge difference to the whole piece. I then added some medium brown over some of the white streaks to add some colour.
Finishing off the arms/hands, collar, handle, flowers etc. It's all lookin good at this stage.
Here I used black with a hint of brown for the middle hem and waist. I never use straight black for shading because it makes it look dirty, by adding the base dark colour of your piece (this one is brown) to the black blends into other colours better.
After adding white highlights to everything, I started the outline. I used straight black for the outline as I want this to be dark and defined. A no. 2 signwriting brush was the weapon of choice. Slow and steady coz we dont want mistakes now!
I wanted more colour so I decided on natures beauty. After using low-tack paper to cover everything up I gently cut around the edges and removed excess. Then I blew on some blue sky, purple mountains and green grass.
...and whaallah! After carefully removing the mask I repainted the outer outline to cover any crappy edges, which makes it all crisp and clean.
After overheading the image on, masking area, cutting out, and basing white, I used similar colours on this big 'M' from Magnacarta. Just a red/orange/y... blend with some dk red 'grass' spikes.
After removing mask these are the crappy edges that need a black outline.
The outline done (no. 2 brush), and more of the logo.
